In1996, His Holiness Srila Mahavishnu Gosvami Maharaj, at the advanced age of 78 years, arrived in the Holy Dham of Dwaraka with the one pointed intention of establishing Srila Prabhupada's missionary activities there and spreading Krishna consciousness to one and all.

Maharaj had no well-wishers, friends or supporters in Dwaraka. But he had complete faith in the purity of devotional service and Srimad Bhagavatam.

When some of his disciples who were travelling with him expressed concern about what could be done for preaching in Dwaraka, Maharaj simply reminded them that our first, and only, business was to chant Krishna’s names and study Bhagavatam seriously. And that is what he did – remarkably staying on an open piece of dry desert-like land on the outskirts of the city of Dwaraka and reading and studying Bhagavatam and chanting the Holy Names of the Lord. He would go for a bath at one of the nearer dharmasalas, and soon, many residents of Dwaraka began conversing about a highly renounced sadhu who was attached to nothing except Bhagavatam!

The Supreme Lord reciprocated with His sincere devotee and a wonderful opportunity arose when a piece of property in the heart of the city, and very close to the main Dwarakadhish temple, was presented to Maharaj to develop as a temple and a guesthouse in the same year. With the strong support and encouragement of HG Yasomatinandan Prabhu, one of Srila Prabhupada’s senior disciples and a pioneer in establishing Krishna consciousness in the state of Gujarat, Maharaj began a makeshift temple, operated a guesthouse and organized harinam and even commenced a yearly Jagannath Ratha Yatra the holy dham, the first being on 26th January 1997!

Growing from strength to strength, his preaching culminated in the   commencement with temple construction sometime in 1999 and, in January 2004, completed and inaugurated the first temple in ISKCON made completely from stone and in accordance with the ancient Vedic science of temple building. Spiritual leaders of the Society from all over the world attended and gave their blessings for this project.

For Maharaj, it was a blissful moment, for he always wanted the temple to be his humble offering to Srila Prabhupada and his mission. Yet, he never rested on the laurels of his achievement, and soon after the temple inauguration, started for the city of Rajkot to commence preaching there!

Maharaj departed from this material world on 25 January 2010, but his spiritual vision and purity of devotional service continue to inspire his disciples and devotees all around the world. ISKCON Dwaraka recently completed the construction of a brand new and fully equipped guesthouse with 27 rooms, thus replacing the previous one, which was torn down for being structurally unsafe. Now, devotees can visit this wonderful holy dham and avail of its accommodation facilities. From the bottom of our hearts, we are sincerely grateful to Maharaj and eternally indebted to him for establishing such a transcendental legacy for the benefit of humanity.
